The Bongo Hop
Afro-Caribbean baroud, mixing funky brass, African rhythms, guitars and transatlantic songs
Territory: Europe except France
“The brassy breadth of the instrumental ensemble calls upon decades’ worth of well-traveled musical circuits between European producers and Colombian performers and genres. From the beginning, we know what La Pata Coja is: a project that crosses water and land in the spirit of far-flung creative collaboration.” Adriane Pontecorvo PopMatters
“The Bongo Hop could be considered part of the new tropical revivalists, together with Meridian Brothers and Dowdelin, with Latin based, afro colombian rhythms, jazzy brass and highly catchy vocals, adding new vocabulary to what is known as Black Atlantic sound.” Andy Cumming Songlines
“I LOVE this track, really this is the kind of stuff, I can imagine myself en la playa.. And you know I love a good horn, I love horns like that when they sprinkle like that so perfectly.” Felix Contreras
“In his quest for a perfect universal groove, Etienne Sevet has won us over with his Satingarona series, an Afro-Caribbean travel diary paying tribute to the immense musical richness of Cali and the South Pacific region of Colombia.” Anamaria Sayre NPR
Hailing from Cuba, Cameroun, France, Colombia, Senegal & Benin, this 8-piece multinational band based in Lyon is about to take you on a colorful dancing voyage. Led by its mastermind, composer producer and trumpetist Etienne “The Bongo Hop” Sevet, it delivers highly infectious afro-caribbean grooves, topped with sexy electric vibes, groovy horns and impeccable vocals.
How? Maybe that’s because this project was born during his extended stay in South West Colombia? Probably, yes. From Womad Canarias to the Barbican Center, from Ariano Folk Festival to Lent Festival, Fusion’s Roter Platz and Montreal’s Nuits d’Afrique, the most prestigious stages have witnessed the power of this unique genre-bending mix of latin, west african, jazz and afro soul. Throughout 4 highly acclaimed records worldwide, The Bongo Hop has demonstrated his appetite for surprising, tasteful and prestigious collabs: Colombian diva Nidia Gongora, Brazilian neo folk singer Lucas Santtana, Haiti’s punky voodoo child Moonlight Benjamin, Angolan prince of semba Paulo Flores, the list is impressive, while the feeling of unity in diversity remains.
Maybe that’s why, with more than 14M streams every year, some of his compositions like Tite Jeanne, Nos Coge la Tarde or Agua Fria, have become anthems of this outernational scene. Time to see that, live!
